I watched the UEFA Champions League draw today. Bayern's Munich's first opponent drawn was unbelievably, Aston Villa. In 1977, I trained at Aston Villa living at Villa's hostel with some other youth players including Gary Willams (in pic with me), Colin Gibson, Terry Wilson. Gary and Colin were on the 1982 Villa team that beat Bayern in the European Cup final with Gary involved in the lone goal of the match. In 1977 and as an American training at a top English club, it was historic, incredibly intimidating and very humbling. Players were very welcoming, but manager, Ron Saunders, not so much as he felt an American as part of the training was too foreign a concept. I was fortunate enough to score for Villa in a match during training which bought me a little patience as well as a few pints from some of the other players. One of my life's greatest experiences. Up The Villa and know we'll have a successful CL run! #UTV #astonvilla #championsleague #UEFA #EPL
We need to broaden our knowledge and outrage on this issue. It is not just the environmental impact. What is just as concerning is the human health impact from plastic. The ingestion, absorption and inhalation of plastic via nanoplastic and microplastic has resulted in plastic in our bodies. Our hearts, our lungs, our kidneys, our testicles, our brains, our blood. There is not enough health research on this subject but there is enough to document the fact that this is not a good outcome for humans. As the Center for International Environmental Law wrote, "Microplastics entering the body via direct exposures through ingestion or inhalation can lead to an array of health impacts including inflammation, genotoxicity, oxidative stress, apoptosis, necrosis which are linked to an array of negative health outcomes including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation, auto-immune conditions, neuro-degenerative diseases, and stroke." to name a few. Why are companies that majorly use or manufacture plastic allowed to sponsor major sports events? #plastic #sustainability #sponsorship
