Passwords are so passé …

Passwords are like a key - 🔑- if they are lost/stolen - a stranger can then use the key to open up your door.

Passkeys - are like the biometric scanners at customs - it’s much more secure and harder for crooks to get in ✅

About 2 months ago - myGov gave the option for people to use passkeys instead of passwords. One of the first govts in the world 🌎 to adopt passkeys 🏆

🔹Q: In a recent post Geoff Schomburgk asked what the take up of passkeys have been to date.

🔹A: As of today 256k MyGov customers have turn on their passkeys.

This is how you turn your passkeys on:

1- down load the mygov app. 2- login and turn on passkeys 3- turn off your password.

The more Australians that turn on passkeys in myGov, the more we can combat scams.

Let me know in the comments below how you found the UX of turning on the passkeys - so I can share with the team at Services Australia 🙏

The Government Services Independent Advisory Board supporting Services Australia has been in place now for 8 months.

There are a number of areas we are looking at - which reflects the diversity of the board.

One of the areas of focus is improving myGov.

In November 2023 myGov had 3.6m users of the app. It now has 5.9m, almost doubling since the board was established.

Given that we have about 20m adults in Australia the adoption rates for the app are quite modest.

In NSW for example, about 85% of adults have downloaded the servicensw app.

Another interesting proxy for adoption could be - what is the percentage of the Australian adult population is regularly using Uber, DiDi and/or a taxi or some other app for service delivery.

The point is - we know there is more to do to make myGov more 🔹useable and 🔹useful

I will keep you updated on myGov initiatives that will improve the experience … and there are many initiatives in the pipeline for this year 🏆✅

I hasten to add - when designing govt services - we need to design for the whole - not just the say 85% who choose to adopt.

Yesterday Min Shorten announced he will retire from politics in Feb 2025 - I will have more to say about his excellent leadership then - needless to say thanks to Min Bill Shorten for asking us to serve on this board - really look forward to working with him as we continue the journey to improve myGov/Services Australia and service delivery 🙏
