I’ve recently read news articles about executives belittling and discrediting their employees, or using profanities when speaking about them. I can no longer remain silent about such unacceptable internal workplace behaviour. This isn’t about a specific organization or industry but, rather, about overall workplace health and safety and the need for all of us to take a stand against workplace violence, bullying and harassment.

We must collectively strive to eradicate workplace abuse, whether it’s manifested in an abuser through intimidation, control, manipulation, name calling, discrediting their CEO/peers/subordinates, physical and/or emotional tantrums, unwanted physical contact/sexual harassment, assault, etc. You have my sincere empathy if you’ve witnessed any of these behaviours, or worse, been subjected to them.

Organizations must play a significant role in the solution to such abuse. And organizational responses can no longer be such unacceptable rhetoric as: ~It’s just who they are, they’ve always been that way. ~You need to toughen up and show them how strong you are in the face of adversity. ~We’ll chat with them and their behaviour will change (perhaps, but likely only very briefly). ~Maybe you should leave the organization; their “leadership” style is obviously too much for you.

As a society, we talk a lot about the need for more respect and civility in the world. Workplaces need to be safe havens for employees with internal cultures that foster respect, professionalism, integrity, fairness, understanding of differences, and compassion; this cannot be lip service.

Allegations need to be taken seriously and investigated promptly; when the violence is substantiated, the abuser need to be dealt with swiftly; and survivors need support to manage the psychological, physical and/or sexualized violence they are enduring or have endured in the workplace. It should go without saying, but survivors are the wrong party to be encouraged or forced to move on.

If you’ve witnessed workplace abuse, please speak up. And if you’re experiencing violence of any kind in the workplace (or anywhere else), please seek help through internal and/or external resources. In all likelihood, you as the survivor are a good person in an impossibly toxic situation.
