Highlights
Last week I wrote about coffee farmers in Ethiopia who received support from Nestlé Nespresso SA and TechnoServe to improve their farming practices and meaningfully increase their incomes.
🏆To reach the scale and quality of our programs and ensure we achieve sustainable impact, we need a really strong team on the ground, and I wanted to share two elements that make our approach and model so successful.
1️⃣ Make it local! 📍
It would be very simple to just bring agronomy experts from Addis Ababa or other countries to teach coffee farmers in Sidama. But that creates some challenges, such as (a) poor communication, (b) lack of trust in the trainer, and (c) low retention of the knowledge. The best way to address this issue is to hire locally and build the capacity of these Farmer Trainers.
Hiring someone from the community where you want to train farmers means: (a) Trainers and farmers speak the same language, use the same terminologies, and understand their local context; (b) Farmers are much more willing to trust their trainer and follow their recommendations when they come from the same place and share a similar background; (c) When the training program ends, most of the Farmer Trainers continue living in their communities and can continue supporting the farmers that live there, so the knowledge is not lost.
2️⃣ Give similar opportunities to identify the best candidates! 🎯 Instead of receiving CVs, interviewing candidates and selecting the best Farmer Trainers only based on this, we want to ensure all eligible candidates have the same starting point and we can evaluate them in action.
After an initial CV screening to ensure prerequisites are met, candidates are invited for an 8-day training, where they learn about coffee agronomy and regenerative agriculture, as well as delivery models and pedagogy for adult learning. The training happens both in a classroom and on the farm, to ensure candidates get their hands dirty (literally!) and learn by doing. At the end of the three days, candidates have to do a final exam in real life, training real farmers on what they have just learnt. The best candidates are then selected to become Farmer Trainers!
💡Even though I knew about TechnoServe's training model for years, seeing it with my own eyes was truly fascinating and inspiring! Thank you, TechnoServe Ethiopia team, for being so welcoming and congrats on the amazing work!

🌍Ethiopia has a very special place in my heart. It is where I started my career in international development 6+ years ago and fell in love with the country’s unique culture, history, and people.
☕Last week I had the privilege to travel to Ethiopia and visit the AAA Program, a 10-year-long partnership between Nestlé Nespresso SA and TechnoServe. The program has already trained over 50,000 smallholder farmers and 200 wet mills that produce high-quality coffee used in Nespresso’s capsules.
👩🌾Two of these farmers are Almaz and Kamisso, who warmly welcomed us into their home in the Sidama region, where they live with their 6 children. Coffee is their main source of income, and they have been growing it for almost 30 years on 0.75ha of land - about the size of a football field. In 2015 they joined the AAA Program and started receiving training on coffee agronomy, regenerative agriculture, and business skills.
🌳In Ethiopia, most coffee trees are extremely old (30+ years old!), and stumping them is the most critical step to improving yields. It consists of cutting all their old main stems and selecting two to three new stems to regrow into a productive tree. By offering the right incentives, we can convince farmers to stump their trees, which can increase their productivity by 2-3x!
🛠 Through our program, Almaz and Kamisso were offered a wheelbarrow to stump more than 100 coffee trees. They had their concerns but decided to take a leap of faith. A few years later, Almaz and Kamisso have already stumped 320 trees and they are planning to stump more in 2024 because they can already earn more with the coffee from these rejuvenated trees.
🥕In addition to coffee, Almaz proudly showed us the kitchen garden she established after our household nutrition training. She now grows beetroot, cabbage, sweet potato, and carrot, and they have increased their household income by selling the excess they don’t eat.
💰With the additional income from coffee and vegetables, Almaz and Kamisso are paying for the studies and school materials of their kids and investing more in their farm!
💡 Having access to the right knowledge, and receiving the right support and incentives can be transformational in the lives of millions of smallholder farmers around the world. I am proud of Nespresso and TechnoServe’s partnership and look forward to many more years of sustainable and deep impact on the lives of coffee farmers around the world.
