Highlights
This week saw the release of Ubuntu Core 24. I joined Canonical to help launch Ubuntu Core... and thus every new version has had a special place in my (tech) heart.
Each release has delivered new functionalities that all drove towards a certain vision of the future for IoT devices. A future that is increasingly our day to day:
- Embedded software is fueled by the innovation of the overall Open Source ecosystem but needs the insurance of Long Term Support more than desktop of server software: Ubuntu Core 24 offers ROS foundational snaps to bring robotics in the production era.
- IoT hardware is varied in nature and an embedded OS should make it as simple as possible to ge the best of the hardware: from FPGA to GPUs, new interfaces let developers embrace AIoT.
- An increasingly complex software stack requires security and compliance: open device management integrates Ubuntu Core devices into existing systems management tool like Landscape or Azure IoT Edge.
- Being increasingly software defined means devices that are highly reconfigurable in the field: new factory installation tools for device initialisation.
To Ubuntu Core 24, another step towards a new vision of embedded Linux.
