Are we seeing a seismic shift in the landscape of PFAS use?
This question is addressed in a recent opinion from Martin Scheringer, Ian T. Cousins, and Gretta Goldenman in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology.
The landscape of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is undergoing a seismic shift towards nonfluorinated alternatives across various industries, as evidenced by industry discussions, public statements, and analyses indicating a transition away from PFAS. While just a few years ago, the focus was on shifting to shorter-chain PFAS, there's now a clear trend towards PFAS-free alternatives, particularly in surface treatments, personal care products, firefighting foams, and more.
The push for responsible manufacturing practices and regulatory pressure are driving this shift, alongside growing awareness of PFAS's environmental and health impacts. However, challenges remain, including the need for stringent emission reductions and resistance to efforts to exclude fluoropolymers and fluorinated gases from PFAS regulations. Monitoring and regulation are crucial to ensuring compliance and accelerating the transition away from PFAS, especially in light of proposed restrictions in the EU.
This shift represents a significant step towards reducing the widespread use of extremely persistent chemicals and underscores the importance of continued vigilance and action to protect public health and the environment.
