Thomas Riedl, Chief Technology Officer at OceanComm
Thomas Riedl is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of OceanComm, a startup company that provides high-speed wireless underwater communication using ultrasound technology.1235 He has extensive experience in the field of wireless communication, particularly in underwater applications.13
Education and Work Experience
- Earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 201413
- Previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2014 to 2016, conducting research in acoustic wave propagation, wireless communications, signal processing, and machine learning3
- Served as a Research Assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2008 to 2014, focusing on acoustic wave propagation, wireless communications, signal processing, and machine learning3
- Worked as a Research Assistant at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2009 to 2012, researching channel coding and investigating the limits of channel coding under practical constraints3
- Gained practical experience as a Communications Engineering Intern at Schlumberger in 2011, where he developed patent-pending algorithms for downhole mud-pulse acoustic communications3
Contributions at OceanComm
- Developed patent-pending algorithms for robust wireless communication underwater at data rates between 1Mbps and 1Gbps, which is over 1,000 times faster than the state-of-the-art3
- Led the OceanComm team in demonstrating Wi-Fi-like data rates and high-quality video streaming from their M1-H150 high-frequency acoustic modem deployed 1,000 feet underwater off the coast of San Diego in 20224
- The M1-H150 modem is 10 to 100 times faster than competing systems and delivers data transfer rates in excess of 1 Mbps at 100 meters4
Thomas Riedl's expertise and contributions have been instrumental in advancing OceanComm's mission to provide high-speed wireless underwater communication capabilities comparable to Wi-Fi on land.

#FPGA #Jobs
At OceanComm, Inc., we make #subsea #WiFi a reality. A few weeks ago, we had an experiment in Lake Michigan using our acoustic modems to demonstrate live, real-time #videostreaming from a remote modem #underwater to another modem off the side of a surface vessel at Mbps data rates.
This first video shows an HD video camera acoustically linked to a surface modem sending a live video stream. Objects are thrown overboard so you can see the objects come into view at 10-15m depth.

The next video shows the camera lowered over 100m until it rests on the bottom of Lake Michigan. The video is sped up so you don’t have to watch all the way down, but the video link remains live and unbroken the entire time. The data rates and video streaming shown here simply don’t exist anywhere else. These demonstrate real-time streaming as would be needed to remotely pilot an unmanned underwater vehicle (#UUV) or send a video uplink from a UUV to a manned or unmanned surface vessel.

We’re excited about the results and hope you are as well.
