3 years ago, my Valedictory address was heard at not one, but 14 USC graduation ceremonies. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, and as other universities shuttered their graduations, USC went above and beyond to ensure that students from the class of 2020 and 2021 could participate in an in person ceremony with their loved ones.
Now, the University of Southern California has decided to silence their 2024 University Valedictorian Asna Tabassum by cancelling her speech on a day she earned the right to speak - to address her class with a "message of hope."
Make no mistake, if USC could hold 14 graduations in 2021 to protect graduates from COVID-19, than they could protect Asna this May. Clearly, their decision is not about 'security;' it is based in fear and prejudice.
Though I have not had the privilege of meeting Asna, I admire her steadfast insistence on upholding the humanity of all people - especially the Palestinian people. I applaud her grace and resilience, and I stand by her today as I join the calls to LET ASNA SPEAK!
