🎯 Lead scoring is broken. (Including the one we built.)

When we built ICP Scoring into Koala, we made some incremental improvements on the general approach that Legacy ABM platforms use, since we heard it was the gold standard.

But I reviewed the Scoring setups of 1,000+ Koala workspaces this weekend, and I don't think this is it.

💡 My initial observations:

  • Feels like ICP fit should be thought of as more of a classification problem than a Scoring problem (eg., you should get concrete labels like "Tier 1 Target Account" vs. "Mid-market in ICP" vs. "Not ICP", rather than an integer 0-100)

  • People often want to build a lookalike off a different "target" list rather than Closed Won (which usually weighs too heavily on "past baggage" and not enough where the GTM team is going)

  • We don't support binary disqualification today, which feels essential for "hard" rules (must be in US, must use X tech, can never be less than 100 employees, etc.)

Who is the best of the best at lead scoring? (Yanno, where the Sales team is really into the scoring!)

I spent the long weekend working on a new proposal and I'd love to get some feedback.  I'm especially curious to learn more about the "firmographic fit" side of lead scoring, as I think our intent scoring is strong

Have some ideas? Comment and I can send you the product spec I worked on all weekend

Know someone great? Tag them and I'd love to learn more about their setup

🤖 "AI"—okay, it’s not really AI, but it highlights exactly how we should be using it: automating those little processes that used to take a couple of minutes, a bit of brainpower, and a few open tabs… all into 1-click.

Before our latest release, sellers were manually taking the data we collected about anonymous prospects—loading company and geo information into Sales Nav, Apollo, etc.—and running queries to make an educated guess at who the prospect might be.

A lot of work for every single prospect! 🤯

But now, we’ve automated the entire workflow.

With every notification for anonymous visitors, we deliver a shortlist of potential prospects—right alongside the alert.

Here’s how it works:

1️⃣ Get a Slack alert when an anonymous visitor from an account hits your site. 2️⃣ Click the Prospects button to start the search. 3️⃣ In seconds, see a list of suggestions based on role, seniority, and location.
