Physician, Ophthalmologist, Innovator, Scientist, Academic Leader

Dr. Tien Wong is a renowned physician and scientist dedicated to enhancing lives through innovation in health. With a strong background in health innovation, research, education, technology translation, and public health, Dr. Wong has made significant contributions to the field.

His academic journey includes completing medical school at the National University of Singapore (NUS), earning a Master's in Public Health (MPH) and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in the USA. Dr. Wong underwent clinical residency training in ophthalmology at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and a retinal fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center, Madison, USA.

He has held prestigious positions such as tenured full Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and currently serves as the Chair and Medical Director of the SNEC. In addition, he is the Deputy Group CEO for Research & Education at SingHealth Duke-NUS.

Specializing as a retinal specialist, Dr. Wong focuses on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in his clinical practice. His research interests revolve around the epidemiology of retinal diseases and ocular imaging, including artificial intelligence (AI). Dr. Wong's remarkable publication record includes over 1,400 papers with an impressive h-index of 148. Furthermore, he has secured substantial grant funding exceeding US$100 million.

Recognized with numerous awards, Dr. Wong has been honored with accolades such as the Australian Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award, the AMGEN Medical Researcher of the Year, the Arnall Patz Medal from the Macula Society, and the Alcon Research Institute Award, among others. He has also received prestigious awards like the President’s Science Award and the President’s Science and Technology Award, the highest honors for healthcare and scientific contributions in Singapore.

Elected as a Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Sciences and an international (foreign) member of the US National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Wong has demonstrated outstanding leadership and expertise in the field of ophthalmology and public health.

Dr. Tien Wong's educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore, a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MPH, PhD in Epidemiology, and Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and completion of Authentic Leadership Development at Harvard Business School Executive Education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Wong has contributed significantly to various esteemed organizations including serving as the Medical Director and Senior Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre, former Deputy Group CEO for Research and Education at SingHealth, Vice Dean at Duke-NUS Medical School, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at National University of Singapore, among others.
