Why You Should Go on a Retreat
I rarely use the word should, but there is a time and place for it. I put retreats in the “should” category because I see them, like sleep or limiting phone use, as part of your mental and physical health strategy in this modern world.
1. You restore physically: There’s a synergy that happens when you eat whole foods, get enough sleep, move your body, slow down your nervous system, remove toxins, and engage in contemplative practices. You activate your body’s natural capacity to regenerate and heal itself. By the third day of retreat, your skin starts to glow.
2. You get a break from the daily buzz: Imagine a day without emails, pinging phones, driving, or the to-do list. Imagine taking the time you put into running your life and using it to live your life. On retreat you have time to watch a sunset, taste your food, look people in the eyes, and ponder a beetle as it crosses your path.
3. You make connections: Often people think of retreats as isolating, but some of my deepest friendships have formed while on retreat. You are with like-minded people who value connection and radical honesty which fosters vulnerable conversations and friendship.
4. You reset your habits: Participants can give up or start at least one new habit while they are there. It’s a lot easier to start a morning meditation practice when you don’t have to make breakfast for kids. When you jumpstart and strengthen your new habit on retreat, it’s established and ready to bring back home to more challenging environments.
5. You connect with nature: You will hear birds, see wild flowers, watch the sunrise, and gaze up at night skies that are packed with stars. You can’t help but feel awe and immense support when immersed in the natural world.
6. You rekindle your spirituality: It’s hard to feel spiritual when your days are packed with to-dos. The quiet time, solitude, and ritual that retreats offer open the door to reconnect with your faith or grace as you understand it. There’s time to chant, pray, and meditate.
7. You remember who you are: There’s a homecoming that happens. You get to meet yourself again, reflect on your life and where you want it to head. You make fresh commitments and get clear on course corrections. Doing nothing is doing something. You need time to make big decisions with clarity, and on retreat you have all the time in the world

Sometimes the day gets away from you so fast.
You start out with a list of good intentions and then, bam! Work, family, traffic… all the stresses of daily life barge in, and suddenly that new yoga class is no longer on the calendar, and you’re tempted to eat fast food for lunch.
Well, this happens to me less often ever since I came up with my Sacred 3. That’s my list of three non-negotiables, the small habits I do every day, no matter how busy I get.
You should try it! It’s super-simple to do. Just take a few minutes to write down all the daily habits you currently do or wish you were doing. Then narrow it down to just 1 to 3 items that you can commit to without fail.
Be real with this. Remember how crazy things got last week… Or that day last month… Is something like that going to happen again?
Probably! Because life happens, despite our best intentions.
Here are some possible non-negotiables to consider.
~Drinking enough water. ~Watching the sunrise. ~Getting outside around nature, even if just for 5-10 minutes (no matter then weather). ~Reading something that inspires you and helps your personal growth. ~Closing your eyes and taking deep breaths for a minute. ~Meditating. ~Eating five servings of vegetables. ~Moving your body with intention every day, even if it’s just a 15-minute walk around the block. (Remember, we’re going for the bare minimum here, so this isn’t a place to list “I will work out every day for 1 hour.”)
Does this list get you thinking in the right direction? The point isn’t to tell you that these should make up your own Sacred 3. That’s up to you!
Ever since I made my own list, and then set about guarding it with a passion, I find that I have fewer days where I feel overwhelmed, like my life is out of control. Every day that I’m able to stay on track – even if it’s just with these three little things – is another day I’m not giving up, not falling back to old habits, and not despairing.
It’s a powerful tactic to shut out the noise and the stress of the rest of the world!
