I took a week off from posting on LinkedIn to spend time with my family and it gave me pause. No scheduled posts. No reposting old content to keep a streak. Just me, my husband and our kids enjoying the beach. In a world that glorifies always being on, a world where we are always accessible, it's easy to forget the importance of recharging. Instead, we often find ourselves reading emails and taking "quick" meetings while on PTO. Sitting on a ferry, feeling the urge to post on LinkedIn made me pause. LinkedIn is where I connect with colleagues, acquaintances and even strangers. Yet I felt that same old tinge of concern I felt in corporate if I didn't show up for a week. And guess what? LinkedIn was exactly where I left it - plus a few more followers. The lesson? Old habits die hard. Prioritize yourself. Take the vacation. Everything else will be waiting for you when you get back. #leadership #coaching #thementorlibrary
Today, I watched my first born graduate from Elementary school. It feels like he was born yesterday. But today, I saw the big kid he’s become, ready to embrace the freedom of middle school and he is running full steam towards it.
As he walked across the stage, firmly shaking hands with his teachers, I couldn’t help but notice how much he’s grown this year. He’s taller than me, he’s taken charge of his morning routine, he’s helping around the house and he’s making better choices about how he spends his time.
We’ve talked a lot about the freedom he‘ll have next year. I remind him often that ‘With great power comes great responsibility’. He rolls his eyes, but his smirk show me he’s listening.
We get to spend the summer together. It’s likely the last one where he will choose to spend time with us. No matter how much I want to keep him right where he is, my role is to prepare him for his next opportunity, so he runs towards it with courage and excitement.
As predicted, I cried - tears filled with pride, knowing he is ready for what comes next. Together, we did our jobs. Our journey continues into the next stage of his adolescence, and I have much to learn to meet him where he is.
Whether at home or in the workplace, this is leadership - guiding, preparing, and supporting those we care about for the future.
How do you prepare the ones you lead for their next big thing?
