Highlights
Yesterday, I had the chance to open some archival hard drives and take a trip down memory lane. What I found was a slice of New Zealand mountain bike history - a teaser for 'How about it?'.
Seventeen years ago, we embarked on an adventure across New Zealand, armed with just a couple of DV cams, some janky tripods, and an unrelenting passion to create a mountain bike film with a unique aesthetic. From the boot of my parents' Subaru, we created a feature-length action sports film. Surviving on a dollar a day, we camped, plucked fruit from trees, and ate a lot of scones.
Miraculously, it worked. 'How about it?' found its way into the global distribution circuit, marking a significant success. We had successfully showcased New Zealand's mountain bike talent to the world.
In those days, iPhones and shreddits were yet to be a part of our vocabulary. Action sports video parts were earned through hard work and carried an immense sense of prestige. Mountain biking hadn't yet reached the level of popularity it enjoys today. We were a group of passionate misfits who had discovered our love for this sport and had an absolute blast doing it.
Reflecting on where life has taken us since those humble beginnings is nothing short of incredible. Many of the talented riders from 'How about it?' have gone on to build global careers in the world of bikes. I've been fortunate to forge a career as a creative with a camera, all thanks to the opportunities this video opened up.
Big thanks to the early supporters who believed in us; Tama Easton, Caleb Smith, Wide Open NZ And to the incredible riders who made this journey unforgettable; Kieran Bennett, Sam Blenkinsop, Wyn Masters, Eddie Masters, Brett Frew & Cam Cole
