You Want to Know What a Career in Sales is Like (But You're Too Afraid to Ask)

As I settle into my new role, I've noticed something interesting during the transition: colleagues are keenly interested in my former position, but there's a catch. Many inquire about the nature of the job and how it works, yet there's a palpable hesitancy. Why? Because of that dreaded word: "sales."

The curiosity is evident, but so is the uncertainty - the silent questions about their own potential in "sales," their ability to "do sales," or simply to sell. This hesitation reveals a crucial gap in understanding that could be the key to informed career decisions.

🎯 The Truth About Modern Sales:  Here's what many don't realize: effective sales isn't about pushing unwanted products. It's about connecting solutions to customers who genuinely need them. You're not a pushy salesperson; you're a problem solver. You're using your expertise and your company's resources to match the right solutions with the right customers. It's about creating value, not pressure.

Let's demystify sales further and take a closer look:

🔧 For the technically trained:  Much of the hard part is already done! Your analytical skills and product knowledge are invaluable in understanding and addressing customer needs. When I transitioned from an underground labour position to sales, my technical background gave me a unique perspective in proposing the best solutions.

🤝 For those with customer-support backgrounds:  Your people skills are gold in sales. You're already adept at understanding customer needs and finding solutions. The technical aspects you'll need to learn are achievable with effort and support.

🏢 The importance of a supportive organization:  If a great company is backing you (like FLS), go for it! It's the best way to develop your skills. The learning tools, PDRs, and support are there for you. My journey at FLS has been enriching because of the supportive environment and resources available.

💡 The reality of a sales career: • It's about solving problems, not pushing products • It's an excellent way to broaden your skill set • You'll gain valuable insights into business operations • The skills you develop are transferable to many other roles

Don't let misconceptions hold you back. A career in sales can be an exciting and rewarding path, no matter your background. It's about making meaningful connections and providing real value.
