CEO and Founder - Generations on Line
Tobey Dichter is the CEO and Founder of Generations on Line (GoL), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting digital literacy, access, and skills to older adults.23 She has held this position since 1999.3
Background and Motivation:: Dichter's motivation for starting Generations on Line stemmed from her 30 years of experience as a communications and public affairs executive, along with her appreciation for the wisdom and experience of older people.1 In 1996, she began studying the potential of the internet to facilitate multigenerational communication, while also recognizing the threat of digital illiteracy marginalizing elders.1
Generations on Line's Mission and Impact:: Dichter recognized that the internet could be especially helpful for older adults by eliminating distance and providing access to resources.5 GoL's mission is to simplify internet tools and overcome seniors' fear of new electronic media.2 The organization creates on-screen tutorials with age-friendly instructions to guide seniors step-by-step.2 As of December 2023, Generations on Line has helped more than 300,000 older adults access the internet.34
