20 years ago today, on May 17th 2004, I was on active duty in the Navy when the first same-sex couples were getting legally married in Massachusetts.

Andrew and I have been married now for almost 14 years 💘 🎉 , and it was people that I did not know, and could not thank, that did much of this work not just for themselves, but for those that would follow. If you were an activist for marriage equality in the 90's and 2000's - thank you 🙏 .

I believe we also have a generational project before us right now, one that I take very seriously, to start a movement to fix, heal, and restore our country. It's an opportunity, but also an obligation, if we are to do the 20-year work to fix American political dysfunction.

Last week in Scottsdale, I actually heard from some of the architects of the marriage equality movement, who painted a picture of how the pro-citizen, pro-democracy movement, facilitated by overhauling calcified and exclusionary election structures, could be having a moment - right now. I'm all in on making that possible in states across the country - in the hope that future generations will enjoy, as we have, the blessings of this country.

Here's the funny thing about movements: they seem impossible, until they seem inevitable. Citizens in some unlikely place, like Alaska, Massachusetts, or Iowa light a fire, and then citizens in every state begin to dream, and then begin to demand.
