Today is World Population Day. It's a good time to revisit the John Brunner dystopian novel of the future of the world: "Stand on Zanzibar." (1969). In it, Brunner predicted that by the year 2010, all the people in the world would need an island the size of Zanzibar (600 square miles) to stand toe-to-toe. He was right. According to the World Population Clock, we are now at 7.716 billion. Time to find a bigger island. I'd like to offer up another book for guiding our ways of thinking: "The Future of Life" by E.O. Wilson. He offers a nuanced look and various projections of how humans are impacting the planet, our health and future as a species, and the cost to billions of other species that we share the planet with. It opened my eyes and it's a enjoyable read.
