Let’s examine who we consider worthy of our attention, prayers, grief, and consideration.

Who must a person be? What must they have achieved? Where in the world must they be from to be considered worthy of rescue no matter the cost?

Must we democratize empathy to extend not only to those whose lives we envy but also those whose circumstances we pray never befalls us?

“She’s impressive!” - President Barack Obama

It is hard to believe that the moment captured here happened 10 years ago today.

Over the years, I have had the uncommon privilege of sharing my story with several world leaders. In every situation these leaders understood and embraced the need to hear directly from those affected by the issues they hope to address. They understood, as all policymakers must, that including those affected by an issue shows an authenticity of purpose, grounded in its reality.

I continue to be grateful for the privilege of using my story and platform to shine a light on the struggles of migrants and refugees around the globe - using our plight and promise as the touch point for closing the gap between the myth of us versus them and striving to get the world closer to a more hopeful future of we.
