💷 What do the take-home earnings of 100 typical UK workers look like? 💷

A few months ago I looked at the average pre-tax incomes of 100 UK workers (link in comments).

But how do the numbers shape up post-tax? After all, its what you take home that really matters.

Well, as you'd expect given the UK's progressive tax system, the differences between the top and the bottom is reduced.

The group's highest income (£118k) is almost 8 times that of the lowest (£15k). But this bottom group are all - definitionally - part time workers (min wage being above £15k annualised).

For full time workers, the top earner in this sample takes home around 6 times that of someone on minimum wage (£18,500 post-tax).

The variance reduces to 5x when compared to the average (mean) post-tax income (£23,500).

As a reminder, each box represents a percentile; so of course, there are lots of people in the UK who earn >£118 post-tax. Zoom in on the top 0.5% or less and you start to see some massive income variance. But in a random sample of 100 UK workers, you would be unlikely to find a £118k+ earner.

What's your reaction to this? Is the income inequality this graphic shows greater or less than what you'd have expected?
