Industrial manslaughter and psychosocial risks

The below, from WorkSafe NZ says:

  • Approximately 12% of suicides were work-related
  • 86% of work-related suicides involved stressors related to work
  • 22% of work-related suicides used means related to work
  • 10% of work-related suicides occurred in the deceased person’s workplace

Tragic numbers.

In a WHS context, my suspicion is very few suicides arising from a business or undertaking are ever notified. Further, those that don't have any very obvious connection to work are probably not investigated.  Which leads to 1) under investigation of many deaths and 2) a disproportionate focus on those with an obvious connection to work (e.g. Police/Defence with access to firearms and Health with access to drugs) #WHS #psychosocial
