It’s rare when an act of of kindness is so great that it leaves a life long mark. I think of this every year when it’s the running of the Boston Marathon. Ten years ago on the year following the bombing of the Boston Marathon, I was most fortunate to be a recipient of this scarf below knitted in our Boston Marathon colors of blue and yellow. This was a year of coming back with #unity, #resilience and with #strength at the starting line for the runners and also as a #GreatNation. All of us, whether you were running or not running, WERE #BostonStrong.

Upon picking up our running bibs on Boylston St on the day prior, which is where the finish line is, we were directed to the Old South Church. To my great surprise the members of thier parish were all lined up on the streets in front of the Old South Church giving out scarfs made from every state in the #USA and seven foriegn countries. Some of the scarves had attached messages and with notes of encouragement and love, they would hug you as they handed them out. It’s hard for a person from the Boston area to randomly hug a stranger but in this case, well let’s say there are hugs and then there are hugs. Each scarf was uniquely made and financed by thier own creator. This means for every runner there was a selfless person who went out of thier way to buy yarn, commit to knit, design it, do the knitting and mail it to the Old South Church, all to someone they will likely never meet. Now i’ve collected a few medals over the years and while they are nice to look at from time to time, this scarf for me is something I’ll keep with me and cherish forever. I would like to personally thank Jeanette from Pasadena TX for your random act of kindness, I hope one day to meet you.

So why is this post relevant in the business world? We are all in this battle together, the strength comes from our solidarity, no one person can do it alone. Pay attention to the team, we all need each other to win. We need our collective brain too because we are all uniquely gifted to contribute with our skillset. Never underestimate the power of a random act of kindness as well, it may well be the secret sauce. Best wishes to all the Boston runners today!
