Tom White is the Editor in Chief at Parallax Photo Journal. He has over twenty years of experience in the fields of art, media, and academia. In addition to his role at Parallax, he is a freelance photographer, curator, educator, and artist. His work primarily focuses on documentary photography, journalism, and editorial projects with an emphasis on planetary health, environmental, and social issues.123
Tom was born and raised in Bradford, West Yorkshire. He is also involved in teaching visual and media literacy, photojournalism, and documentary photography.34 His notable contributions include a deep dive into Muhammad Fadli's work for Parallax Photo Journal and involvement in award-winning projects such as "The Banda Journal," which won the 2021 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards.5

In 2019 I was part of a research trip to Nepal looking at the intersection of climate change, development and community resilience. I was fortunate enough to trek through remote regions of Upper Mustang, meeting people throughout this harsh yet spectacular landscape, and to explore Patan in Kathmandu, still rebuilding after the earthquake of 2015. This research is ongoing, and includes contributions from scientists, healthcare professionals and cultural experts both from Nepal and elsewhere.
One of the local partners in this is Karma Flights, a Nepal-based nonprofit organization, founded a decade ago by paragliding pilots undertaking a range of humanitarian and educational activities, including medical, mental, and dental health camps. These initiatives have saved lives, reduced suffering and extended professional and personal development opportunities to thousands of women, children and men in Nepal. The Karma Flights group is now offering trekking services (Karma Treks) and one of the most dedicated and professional nonprofits operating in Nepal.
Karma Flights needs a minimum of $4,000 to run their annual health clinic in the rural Gorkha District, affected by the 2015 earthquake where people continue to struggle to access diagnoses and treatment for a variety of illnesses. Your donation will ensure the health camp takes place again! The last 3-day health camp benefited nearly 1,000 women, children and some men in need. For many of these beneficiaries, this is the only time they have access to a medical doctor. This year, incorporating our ongoing research, we are partnering with Karma Flights to deliver a more holistic approach, which also seeks to address underlying health causes rooted in environmental degradation, pollution and nutrition under the framework of "Planetary health".

My last official day at Yale-NUS College was the end of June 2022 and I finished with a Summer LAB (Learning Across Boundaries) Programme working with a fantastic group of students using research based photojournalism, the doughnut economics framework and seventh generation thinking to explore the topic of “Visualising Planetary Health in Singapore".
It’s been wonderful to end my time at Yale-NUS on this high, working alongside students who exemplify the Yale-NUS ethos, who consistently challenge me to raise the bar, and who then put in the work to clear it.
I can say it's been an incredible seven year journey, from being invited to share my work as a photographer with one of the first cohorts of what was then a brand new college, to the honour of being asked to develop a photojournalism and documentary curriculum, with my first classes through various programmes, workshops and talks with amazing and generous invited guests and in this most recent semester sharing my love of the moving image with a “Language of Cinema” module.
Though all this the support and collaborative endeavours of colleagues across the majors and in departments college wide has been incredible. You know who you are and I am very much in your debt, thank you! It has truly been a joy and a privilege to be one small part of the work everyone has been engaged in building Yale-NUS into the unique community it is, and always will be.
Yale-NUS College itself will be closing in 2025, and while I will no longer be teaching each semester, I hope in the coming years to be able to work with students, faculty and alumni until then, and even beyond. It's a wonderful community and an honour to be a part of it.
