Breaking News: personalisation doesn’t really need to be personal.

Last week, I spoke to a sales recruiter who’s been struggling to attract candidates.

I thought he’d probably been sending a generic message (which rarely impresses salespeople).

But no, he’d been “personalising” them.

I dug deeper. What did that actually mean?

To him, personalisation meant including their current company and a sentence about something he’d spotted - like their favourite football team, for example.

And that was his mistake.

Because personal information ≠ personalisation.

Anyone can add personal information to a message after quickly scrolling your profile. So it has little impact.

But personalisation is a message that makes you feel like it was written specifically for you and sent only to you.

It makes you feel like you’re the chosen one. And you wonder how a random person on LinkedIn can know EXACTLY how you’re feeling.

Being able to write something that feels personal but doesn’t contain any personal information is a skill.

(And I think recruiters deserve to learn writing skills like this… but that’s a point for another day).

You need to: -> Use words that resonate with the reader. -> Show them that you GET them. -> Show that you know what they’re facing. -> Show that you know how special they are.

And most importantly, show them why you’re almost 100% certain they’d benefit from hearing about your opportunity.

Personalisation doesn’t need to be personal.

It just needs to FEEL personal.

All Rec2Recs and Sales Recruiters should have a content KPI.

It’s literally a no-brainer for Rec2Recs and Sales Recruiters to build a brand on LinkedIn.

Who are they targeting?

Recruiters & Salespeople.

Who’s on LinkedIn everyday as part of their job?

Recruiters & Salespeople.

Hiding in the shadows is a HUGE missed opportunity.

1️⃣ Your prospects are EXACTLY where you need them to be. They’re scrolling their feed during their lunch break and commute. They’re looking for leads and sending outbound messages to prospects. They WILL see your posts.

2️⃣ Recruitment and sales are fast-paced and VERY demanding jobs. If you crack a joke about the industry, write something super relatable, or post a lighthearted personal story, you’re GUARANTEED to get good engagement.

3️⃣ Recruiters and salespeople are CONSTANTLY striving for more. They want to grow. They want to improve. They want to make more money. So they’ll appreciate, engage with, and share valuable posts that inspire them.

I’d argue that LinkedIn is just as valuable as cold-calling for Rec2Recs and Sales Recruiters. If you have dialout KPIs, you should have LinkedIn post KPIs, too.

What do you think?
