“In a dark place we find ourselves,

and a little more knowledge lights our way.” – Yoda

When an experience hurts or doesn’t go our way …

The end of a friendship A loss in business An estrangement A job loss A break up

…it’s normal to replay matters in our heads. 🤔🤨 🙄

“What could I have done differently? How could…💬 Yada yada blah blah blah”

👍 Some reflection is useful for learning from painful experiences.

👉 But “Reflection” can reach Sith Lord scary if left unchecked.

We call it Brooding

Experts call it “Negative Rumination”

Research shows that women tend to do more brooding.

Those who experienced childhood trauma may be more inclined to be “brooders”.

🌀 A prolonged cycle of negative rumination is strongly correlated with depression. 👈

Depression is the worst so…

🥱 Yup, not all that groundbreaking.

But when I am struggling with my ability to self-regulate…

My #1 way to hit pause ⏸ on self-defeating, self sabotaging, and downward spiral thinking is to simply let someone else do the talking.

If I’m deliberate about my selection, 🧘‍♀️ it can help me problem solve far more quickly.

👏And I can learn something.

Most of the time, this helps me rapidly shift my energy from dark, anxious, frustrated to calm and surrendered.

And sometimes I find deep inspiration.

While we can’t change the past, we can influence, even control, what thoughts we allow ourselves to concentrate on.

⛽️And thoughts feed emotions.

So here are a few books I use for a lil mindset reset.

There are sooo many in my library … but these off the top of my head…

Yesterday, I had the honor of meeting with a very authentic and fine human being who also happens to be a CEO.

A few attributes I noted about him…

Curiosity Active listening Empathy Critical thinking Humility Compassion Kindness Self-awareness Generosity #emotionalintelligence

How refreshing.

Not coincidentally, this CEO comes from a family who made incredible sacrifices and who took risks the likes of which most of us could never ever conceive.

He is precisely the kind of leader that I would like to become.

How many leaders let pride, ego, competitiveness, inadequacy, insecurity, and a lack of self-awareness, drive them to see defeating behaviors?

There’s so much power in remaining humble, teachable, and human.
