Communicating organizational goals and priorities is critical, but Samsung has chosen a ..unique.. way to communicate!

In my last class, we discussed communication in the context of risk management. When an organization is facing hostile environmental factors, communicating key priorities and tolerance to risk is critical to ensure the whole organization is pulling in the same direction.

Samsung is trying to communicate the existential crisis it feels it is facing to the executive class by requiring them to work a six-day workweek. The theory is that this will highlight that the company is in crisis management mode.

I appreciate a couple of things about this announcement - this is aimed at the executives, not the line workers. However, as has been pointed out, when the executives work extra, they then require their staff to work extra.

Additionally, my class discussed differing cultural contexts. This seems an example of a plan that was conceived in a specific cultural context (Korean) and rolled out globally - which may not be appropriate.

What do you think? There is never a simple, easy answer to getting an organization to "pay attention" and focus on a unified goal. What have you seen that works?
