The industry, having just started to market its 800 GB/s DSPs, is already developing the next generation DSP with 1.6 TB/s transmission speed. Of central importance is the need to reduce power consumption, as AI turns out to be extremely power hungry. Training an AI model produces the equivalent of 500 metric tons (example for GTP3) of CO2. Compare that to 1.6 metric tons for a return flight between Los Angeles and London. The optical fiber is the work horse for high-capacity data transport. Since the optical fiber was invented in 1954, it has seen exponential growth both in bandwidth and transmission length. Over 5 trillion meters of optical fiber have been deployed since the beginning with another 500 billion meters added annually. Today’s submarine optical fiber cables span all the world’s oceans with transmission speeds of several TB/s. One of the research papers presented at the OFC showed an optical fiber with 23 PB/s transmission speed. It will take several years before this technology is available commercially.
