William Sclater (1611): “… in accepting some to salvation, rejecting others to damnation: the Lord shall declare his justice and equity hereby; by giving to every man according to his works, as the best means to declare the truth of faith, hidden in the heart, and the certainest evidences of infidelity lurking in hypocrites.”

Bunyan (1665): “When they see us on the right hand of Christ, mingled among the Angels of light, and themselves on His left hand, mingled with the angels of darkness; and, I say, when they shall see our hearts and ways opened before their eyes, and acknowledged by the Judge as honest hearts and good ways, the very same ways that they hated, slighted, disowned, and despised, what will they, or what can they say, but this: ‘We fools counted their lives madness, and their end to be without honor; but how are they numbered with the Saints, and owned by God and Christ!’

And truly, if it were not so that the world might, by seeing the change wrought in the godly at their conversion, be convinced of the evil of their ways, or be left all the more without excuse in the day of God, along with some other reasons, I am persuaded they [believers] would not stay as long from Heaven as they do, nor undergo so much abuse and hardship as frequently befalls them. God, by lengthening out the lives of His people who are scattered here and there among men in this world, is preparing evidence for the Day of Judgment and the overthrow of the stubborn forever and ever. As I have said, by the conversion, life, patience, self-denial, and heavenly-mindedness of His dear children, He will deal the world a heavy and most dreadful blow.

Now, when God has thus laid open the work of Grace, both by the Book of Life and the Christian’s heart, then their pleading about what gifts and abilities they had in this world will fall to the ground of its own accord. They will now see that gifts and grace are two different things; and also, that whoever is graceless, no matter how excellent their gifts may be, must perish and be lost forever.”
