Friday Fun Fact: Did you know that the most common name for someone in the business world is "Rug"?

If you let someone walk on you 1 time, you are forever known as Rug to that person. Because they will continue to walk all over you from that moment forward.

Many people willfully change their name to Rug early on in their new environment as the bully in the room walks all over them for the first time.

I’m here to make sure you never change your name to Rug.

Most people, including native speakers, are not equipped with the tools to be assertive in the work place. This results in people silencing their most valuable virtue, courage.

When we silence courage, the end result is being passive, which leads to us being walked on.

There are many reasons for this:

  • They fear that if they stand up to this person who has spent more time at the company, has a higher title, or even just clashes with a co-worker, that they will be reprimanded and possibly even lose their job.

  • They have tried to stand up before, but their words did not come out as they had wished. This resulted in others perceiving them as aggressive, which caused an adverse effect. Instead of being viewed as a courageous leader, they were viewed as emotional and vengeful. Maybe it even lead to a fight instead of a constructive discussion.

  • They feel that they are not experienced enough to say something in order to defend themselves, and thus just take these punches on the chin.

The fact of the matter is that not everyone needs to be a courageous leader and stand up to every bully that crosses their path. However, no one wants to be called rug.

I help leaders in big tech, big law, and global companies become highly respected, assertive leaders. Being assertive is not aggressive nor direct, and it's certainly not being passive.

Being assertive is being proactive and addressing issues that need to be addressed, and doing so in a way that is constructive. It requires initiative, empathy, listening, and trust.

If you are interested in learning how to find the right balance of courage and words to use so that others welcome you to give them feedback, as they feel comfortable you’re not trying to be aggressive, direct, or some type of bully, then I encourage you to join the Talk With Tone Book Club.

The Book Club will launch October 3, but in the mean time you can learn more here - https://lnkd.in/eiSHwxQF
