With the implosion of #FTX (a.k.a. delayed onset Terra Lunitis), does anybody else feel like we're getting a masterclass in unregulated financial markets?

Asked another way: does anyone actually believe that traditional markets would play out differently if JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, et al. had zero oversight?

This isn't a crypto problem. It's a governance problem.

To be clear, I didn't say regulation. Regulation tries to prove a negative. It's reactive, and written in blood. The irony of regulation is that the more you write, the more defined it becomes, and the more inapplicable / exclusionary it is.

There's a better way. Underlying tech implemented such that bad actions are made impossible.

This is the point of open source code and smart contracts. Nobody behind the scenes making a biased decision or incentivized improperly. Nobody executing false trades or hiding liquidity issues.

The mechanisms are transparent and auditable, and exceptions can't be made.

Not "wouldn't" or "shouldn't", but "can't".

The great tug of war in crypto isn't #centralization or #decentralizedfinance, or even #custodial or #noncustodial.

Those points are relevant of course. But the real heart of the debate is governance and control, and it'd be a real shame if we let crypto turn into just another online parallel of legacy finance.
