It's awesome to hear the buzz around KubeCon | CloudNativeCon in Chicago (11/6). It's been a long time since we heard this many people actually excited (rather than dread or obligation) about an in-person enterprise IT event.
Here we break down some of the specific CNCF technologies to watch. Our bet is (1) Cilium and (2) eBPF, as well as (3) cloud-native AI (those two themes coming together in some way) - are going to be the big storylines out of the event.
If it’s infrastructure and it’s not open source, it’s almost like it doesn’t even exist in the market these days. And if it’s infrastructure and it’s open source, KubeCon is where you’re going to get the highest concentration of everything and everyone that matters in one spot. Good luck to everyone who's hustling to make a splash there with customers and prospects, and congratulations to the CNCF and Linux Foundation oranizers who have generated a lot of excitement.

Is the Media Interest Drop-Off for Instagram Threads Temporary or Permanent?
There is a big difference between a net-new platform like Twitter in its early days, carving out massive publicity on the merits of a novel technology — versus Instagram Threads being annointed, based on the depth of its backers and all the built-in PR advantages of being an Instagram / Meta product.
There was a certain glee around Threads’ launch--the politicized nature of things, a lot of headlines dunking on Elon Musk, and delighting in the turmoil around Twitter and missteps around monetizing checkboxes, and censorship and n- other factors...so the PR comparison is much more complicated than a head-to-head battle between two platforms.
But you do have to wonder, given the already massive decline in Instagram Threads media attention, how it will ever achieve the sustained run of publicity that propped up Twitter (X) and whether that can ever be duplicated at that scale again. Perhaps the nature of Threads as a platform does not carry the built-in virality with reporters that was a huge contributing factor to Twitter’s visibility - but if this is a PR battle, it might be a TKO in the second round.
Between 2008 and 2009, Twitter jumped from 900-ish reporters actively covering it, to 4500-ish (in the tech industry alone)...and that was obviously just the beginning. Between its July launch and today, Instagram Threads has gone from 1100-ish reporters covering it (tech industry reporters), to about 200. Check out the post to see more detail on the comparisons.
