I'm very excited to share our latest paper On the Rocks: Evaluating Critical Mineral Dependency and Risks. This paper highlights a number of key issues to consider in industrial policy and program strategy and management across the civilian and defense sectors.
While AI, renewables and semiconductors are gaining a lot of attention and focus with potential wide ranging impact for citizens, industry and government, (and rightfully so!) the "rocks" or critical minerals that are essential components of devices (e.g. smart phones, EV batteries) are often forgotten.
Understanding which critical minerals are most important to key technologies, where in the supply chain the US is most vulnerable with each of those critical minerals and what risk factors will disrupt supply chains even further is essential for government executives to make industrial policy decisions and manage program investments with lasting impact.
