Highlights
Watching Detect - just announced $30m in funding from Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to scale its at-home molecular #COVID diagnostic.
This is a Company to follow / invest in / partner with.
Problem: Early and accurate detection of COVID is hard. Variants make it harder. Future viruses are even scarier.
Current testing options:
- Lab testing - takes time, subject to availability
- Home antigen tests - low accuracy, low sensitivity
Detect offers: A home molecular diagnostic. The accuracy of a lab test (PCR), high sensitivity (early detection), convenience of at-home use, results in 1 hour.
Team: Led by Jonathan Rothberg (454 Life Sciences, RainDance), Hugo Barra (Meta, Google) - the team you’d want solving consumer health, e-com, supply chain problems - can scale and exit.
The National Institutes of Health funded $8m 4 months ago, BARD just committed up to $30m, have not announced institutional investors to date.
Comps:
- Cue Health received $400m+ gov. contracts, growing rapidly and a $2B market cap,
- Lucira is trading at a $200m market cap after product launch a little over a year ago.
No reason why Detect wouldn’t follow a similar trajectory, having received EUA authorization and began selling test kits mid-December.
I have no economic interest in the business, just a fan.

Good to see TTG Imaging Solutions exit to Sentinel Capital Partners with velocity after closing 9+ acquisitions in the last 2 years.
I'm impressed by their integration of assets (vs. just bolting on for a size premium) - easier said than done in complicated operating environments.
Congrats to Matthew Mastarone, Mike Hewitt, Michael Shein, and Paul Murphy on the Sentinel side.
