Highlights
Lifestyle medicine is often thought of as only preventive, and it is powerful preventive medicine for many diseases, including the most common ones that cause suffering and premature death, such as many cancers, cardiovascular diseases and dementia.
But it is also important in those who are already very sick and require drugs to treat their illnesses is also important and often overlooked.
For example, aerobic exercise and an anti inflammatory diet are powerful treatments for depression.
Exercise lowers the risk of many cancers and has been shown to improve survival in those already diagnosed with breast, colon, and prostate cancer.
There are many more examples like this.
The point is the distinction between lifestyle medicine and drugs and surgery is often an artificial one.
Don't fall for black and white thinking or the either/or approach.
Use every tool in the toolbox that's appropriate to help you flourish in life.

Another example of drugs that should be considered in healthy people is hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women.
Unfortunately, the WHI study scared many people away from these drugs due to media headlines and incorrect interpretation of the study.
This study freaked many clinicians and patients out due to reported increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and breast cancer, and millions of women stopped their hormones or decided never to start them.
The reality is for women who started the hormones in the age range of 50–59, the increased risk for any of these outcomes was 1/1000 women per year or less in either the estrogen only (CEE) arm or the the combined estrogen/progestin (CEE/MPA) arm.
More importantly, the risk of death from all causes was lower in both hormone arms than in the placebo group in women ages 50–59.
Not only did these women have unwarranted suffering from the symptoms of menopause, they were also deprived of protection from diabetes, bone fractures, colon cancer, breast cancer (estrogen arm only), heart disease (breast cancer arm only), and all-cause death.
But would I tell women taking menopausal hormone therapy not to engage in lifestyle medicine??
Of course not! That would be absurd!
They will derive great benefits from a rigorous exercise regimen (or at least more rather than less physical activity), a nutritious eating style, a great social life, and getting enough sleep, etc.
Lifestyle medicine will be powerful as will the hormones they take.
