Ujjal Dosanjh is a prominent Canadian lawyer, politician, and civil rights activist, known for his significant contributions to Canadian politics and advocacy for social justice. Born on September 9, 1947, in Dosanjh Kalan, Punjab, India, he immigrated to the United Kingdom at the age of 17 before moving to Canada in 1968. Political Career
Dosanjh's political career began with his election as a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party (NDP) in 1991. He served as the Attorney General of British Columbia from 1995 to 2000, where he was known for his strong stance on various issues, including his response to the Gustafsen Lake standoff and his advocacy for human rights and multiculturalism.13 In 2000, he became the 33rd Premier of British Columbia, making history as Canada's first Indo-Canadian provincial leader. However, his tenure was short-lived as he lost the subsequent election in 2001.23
After returning to law practice for a few years, Dosanjh transitioned to federal politics as a member of the Liberal Party. He was elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and served as Minister of Health until 2006. Throughout his federal career, he focused on healthcare issues and was an advocate against privatization of public health services.123
Advocacy and Legacy
Ujjal Dosanjh has been an outspoken critic of extremism and violence within the Sikh community following a personal attack in 1985 when he was severely beaten for denouncing Sikh extremists. He has remained a vocal advocate for civil liberties and has worked with various organizations aimed at supporting immigrants and promoting multiculturalism in Canada.14 His contributions have earned him recognition as one of Canada's top immigrants and a respected figure in Canadian politics.2
