I see a lot of discussion about how wrong it is for people to take parental leave only to resign within weeks of returning. That this is why companies don’t want to hire pregnant people. And I agree that something is wrong here…
What’s wrong is toxic workplaces where it takes an extended leave for employees to realize they’ve been gaslit for far too long.
What’s wrong is leadership who doesn’t properly support a return to work and partner with the employee to create a transition plan.
What’s wrong is minuscule leave policies conflicting with any reasonable childcare possibilities. 8 weeks of leave but the baby can’t start daycare until 3 months old so you’re forced to pay for a babysitter at your home which can double or triple the cost.
What’s wrong is blaming the employee, for assuming they’re “trying to steal time/money from the company” when they’re likely taking their first break from work in a long time.
Parents who are properly supported before, during, and after their leave often become the very best team members.
You know who gets shit done? You know who figures out a way?
Moms.
What’s wrong is companies who can’t see that.
(Edited to add: I didn’t have another baby. These are my two babies 7 year ago when little sis was born. I know all of the above from experience and these two are my why every day.)
16 months later and this stat still lives on, being quoted by retention vendors daily. If anyone wants to give it an update I'd love to hear something new in product pitches.
