National Solar Observatory, Director

Valentin Martinez Pillet is a prominent solar physicist and the former Director of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in the United States.12 He held this position from August 2013 to May 2024, overseeing the operations of the 4m Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) in Maui, Hawaii, and the solar synoptic GONG network distributed at six sites around the globe.2

Prior to his role at NSO, Martinez Pillet was a Research Professor at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in Tenerife, Spain.2 He has extensive experience in solar physics research and instrumentation, having served as the principal investigator for several significant projects, including:

  1. The Imaging Magnetograph Experiment on the Sunrise balloon-borne telescope
  2. The Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager for the ESA Solar Orbiter mission2
