Chief Operating Officer, Health Information Project, Inc. (HIP)

Valerie Berrin is the Chief Operating Officer at Health Information Project (HIP), a non-profit organization based in Miami, Florida. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion/Religious Studies from Barnard College, which she attended from 2007 to 2011. Prior to her college education, Valerie studied at Gulliver Preparatory School from 2003 to 2007.1

In her role at HIP, Valerie oversees an organization that empowers high school students to address health crises affecting their generation. HIP's mission is to educate teenagers about health issues and connect them with community health resources. The organization accomplishes this through a school-based, peer-to-peer comprehensive health education model.1

Valerie co-founded HIP with her sister Risa Berrin shortly after graduating from college. The organization trains high school juniors and seniors to teach their ninth-grade peers an innovative health education curriculum. As Chief Operating Officer, Valerie has been instrumental in expanding the program beyond Miami into other parts of Florida.3

Valerie has shown an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, even selling mangoes from her backyard for charity. During her time at Barnard College, she volunteered as a health teacher in the New York City public school system. Her leadership skills were further recognized when she was selected to participate in Reality Impact, a Schusterman Foundation initiative that provides social impact training to entrepreneurs worldwide.2

Valerie's contributions have been recognized with awards such as the Gulliver Schools Rising Star Award in June 2018, which honors young alumni making significant contributions to society through professional or philanthropic work. She was also named a New Leaders Council Miami 2014 Fellow.1

Outside of her professional life, Valerie is active in sports and community service. She enjoys playing tennis and golf, coaches a youth girls basketball team, and runs her local community basketball league. She also enjoys spending time with her nephews.2
