This was my 1-1 call with Vicki Saunders (She/Her) today. Vicki is the Founder of Coralus and I recently became a Coralus Activator! Coralus is an International professional network that lends money interest-free to women-led ventures. I'm so grateful to Rachel Carr and Vanessa Ferguson for introducing me to the network. Earlier this summer, I was in Toronto for Collision Conference, and I was able to slip away for an evening to attend a backyard meet & greet in Vicki's backyard.

Today, Vicki and I talked about what community-building means for brands. How everyone seems to have a love-hate relationship with the platforms. And we talked about how events (in person and online) can reach higher potential with thoughtful preparation and timely follow up. We chatted about collaboration with business partners and how important it is to have complementary strengths. "If you’re not good at something, please don’t touch it," is a principle Vicki's team puts into practice. The goal is to allow team members to play to their strengths while working collaboratively on whatever task needs doing.

Coralus is launching Pods next week and I've signed up for two! Excited to see what the next year brings for me now that I've found a new professional "home" in the Coralus network.

#CreativeMorningsMSP held at MCAD this morning, with a heart-full presentation from Peter K. Wong. My favorite takeaway?

Q: How do you create spaces where people feel safe to be themselves?

Pete’s answer: Play games!

💯

I really couldn’t agree more. I’m not just saying this as an improv performer! I’ve seen in person and online gatherings reach a whole new layer of meaning and become unforgettable when some aspect of play is in the room too.

Why does it work? So many reasons! But here’s one:

People are pretending to be someone else most of the time. Putting them in a situation where playing pretend is the explicit rule reverses gravity and frees us up to experiment with who we MIGHT be when we stop pretending. Turns out you can bump into who you really are in the process!

A harmony song circle leader I follow always encourages singers in this direction. “Let’s try it!” she says, with infectious enthusiasm. She sets a ground rule of acceptance for whatever experimental thing happens next. Before we know it, we’re opening up and using our voices in ways we didn’t think we could, moments before. (Her name is Sarina Partrige, by the way, and I recommend following her body of work! She’s one of my biggest influences.)
