Highlights
This year was challenging. As my fellow podcasters know, getting any independent show created, out in the world, and into peoples ears is tough. Helping to run a non-profit media company (Urbanist Media) isn't easy either. But, nevertheless, looking back on my 2023 with the Urban Roots Podcast, we really did accomplish so much. I'm proud of the work me, Deqah H., and Connor Lynch produced. So please allow me my own end of the year countdown...
FIVE SHORTS ON THE RADIO - Our collaboration with Cincinnati Public Radio / WVXU for Juneeteenth allowed us to create 5 shorts highlighting little-known but pivotal African American people/places of Cincinnati history. A big shout out to the wonderful folks at Cincinnati Public Radio — Tripp Eldredge and Jenell Walton — for believing in us and the importance of bringing these stories to the radio.
FOUR MINI SPOTLIGHTS - Following the HAANDS conference, we made 4 mini-episodes spotlighting some of the kick-ass women we met who are doing inclusive, preservation-based development in their communities: Tanya Debose (Preserving Communities of Color, Houston); Desiree` D. Powell, CNU-A (DRBTS, Houston); Dionne Baux (Main Street America, Chicago); Amanda Elliott (Main Street America, California); and Rita Cofield (J. Paul Getty Trust / Friends at Mafundi, Los Angeles). A big thanks to all of you!
THREE LONGFORM CONVERSATIONS - We had longform, inspiring conversations with three powerhouses of their industries: Brent Leggs of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, who is raising millions to preserve Black places; Rukaiyah Adams of the 1803 Fund, who is also raising millions to redevelop a historically Black neighborhood in Portland, Oregon; and Zahra Ebrahim, the multi-disciplinary co-founder of Monumental, who is pushing the envelope on what community engagement in real estate can be. I’m so grateful for the time each of these luminaries gave us — I truly believe these conversations are the beginning a new, more equitable paradigm shift in preservation and development.
TWO TRAILERS - Meanwhile, behind the scenes, we’ve been preparing for a few documentary-style series that we'll release in 2024, including one on the lost city of Vanport in Oregon. Big thanks to the wonderful Laura Lo Forti of Vanport Mosaic for hosting us this past May, for tirelessly recording oral histories of Vanport survivors/descendants, and for trusting us to bring their important stories to life.
