Strengthening connections through impactful, food-centered events. Founder & CEO of Culinary Artistas.

Vanessa Silva is the Founder and CEO of Culinary Artistas, a culinary school and event space located in the historic Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco.1 She established the company in 2016, driven by her passion for food and a desire to share it with her community.2

Background and Career

Vanessa's journey in the culinary world began in her childhood in Brazil, where she developed a love for cooking as a means of communication.5 Before founding Culinary Artistas, she worked in various roles:

  • Digital Communications Consultant (2009-2016)
  • Sr. Account Supervisor at Compass Healthcare Marketers (2013-2014)
  • Founder of La Happy Belly (2012-2018)1

Culinary Artistas

Under Vanessa's leadership, Culinary Artistas has evolved into a multifaceted business offering:

  • Children's cooking classes and camps
  • Birthday parties and celebrations
  • Corporate team-building experiences
  • Family cooking events
  • Monthly subscription boxes for at-home cooking2

The company aims to create a positive relationship between children and real food while teaching important concepts like mathematics, science, and teamwork.3

Entrepreneurial Journey

Vanessa's path as an entrepreneur has been marked by both challenges and successes:

  • She initially partnered with another businesswoman to launch Culinary Artistas but had to take sole ownership after six months.5
  • Faced with financial difficulties, she restructured the business with help from mentors and expanded services to include adult classes and corporate events.4
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, Vanessa pivoted the business to offer online cooking classes and cooking kits, resulting in a 25% revenue increase compared to 2019.4

Personal Philosophy

Vanessa is committed to creating a positive impact through food education and empowerment. She believes in:

  • Strengthening connections through food-centered events
  • Promoting health and sustainability through cooking
  • Empowering both children and adults to develop a positive relationship with food12

Vanessa continues to grow Culinary Artistas, drawing inspiration from culinary icons like Alice Waters and focusing on creating a supportive environment for her employees and the community.4

Highlights

It's our last working week of the year and a great opportunity to reflect back on 2023. I'm doing that from my home's warm and quiet kitchen, my child safely sleeping in the room next to me, holding my cup of coffee with perfectly healthy hands and thinking… already so many blessings, so much to be grateful for.   At Culinary Artistas it was a year to take risks, make necessary investments and lean on one another in new ways. We are prepared to leave this year much stronger than we started and this is the time to celebrate what we've accomplished together.   Some 2023 Culinary Artistas team accomplishments and highlights: • We were able to grow every single program, both educational and corporate, despite a challenging post-pandemic economy. • We upgraded our marketing, operations, reporting and business processes, ending the year with a robust business engine. • We launched two social impact programs and started partnerships with 2 new agencies, enabling us to diversify our reach and make a bigger social impact in our communities. • For me personally, it was a year to embrace growth and vulnerability, get even more clear about strengths and purpose, and lean on the talents of my amazing team to get through challenges and deliver on our goals and hoped for achievements. I feel we are crossing the finish line closer together, more knowledgeable and with an expanded vision of what we are able to accomplish in the year to come.   I want to close this reflection by saying that we are not blind to the pains of the world around us — much the opposite, they are many and so deep — but we collectively believe that by teaching a language of love, of connection, of celebrated cultural traditions, we are creating a small but powerful way for people to come together in peace, joy and celebration.

Cheers, Vanessa

Ever seen a team having so much fun? (And eating so many veggies?!)
