Analyzing Urban Traffic: A Comparative Perspective - Delhi vs. Bangalore . . . . . . . . . In recent times, I've had the opportunity to personally navigate the dense traffic in two of India's major cities: Delhi and Bangalore. This experience has led me to advocate for the use of 'minutes per kilometer' as a metric to better understand and quantify traffic jam scenarios. During 2023 Diwali in Gurgaon, I experienced a severe traffic jam that resulted in a 150-minute journey to cover merely 40 KM. Reflecting on my past five years commuting from Rohini (Delhi) to Gurgaon, the time taken usually ranged from 75 to 90 minutes post the removal of the Ambience Mall toll, translating to about 2.25 to 3.75 minutes per KM, even in peak traffic conditions. The scenario changed when I relocated to Bangalore. My regular car commute here covers 7 km, typically taking between 45-60 minutes. However, on certain extreme days, this has extended to as much as 130 minutes, equating to approximately 18.6 minutes per KM in the heavy traffic conditions. This 'minutes per kilometer' metric provides a clearer picture of the traffic situation, offering a tangible way to compare and understand the severity of traffic jams across different urban settings. Through this lens, we can gain a deeper insight into the mobility challenges in our cities. It underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure and traffic management to enhance the efficiency of our daily commutes and overall urban life quality.
