Highlights
Excited to celebrate 7 years at LinkedIn and my new role as Senior Enterprise Account Executive! This past week, I qualified for LinkedIn’s President’s Club (top 5% of reps). Shoutout Kyle Roslyn, Daanish Majeed, and Dylan Curtis; wouldn’t be possible without your support.
Last week, I was named amongst the top 1% of sales reps globally out of over 2,000 people at LinkedIn.
I’m honored by that. My journey to LinkedIn has been a series of unlikely chances, hard work, and a lot of luck. Here’s that story: —— “There’s a snowball’s chance in hell to get your foot in the door, but you could try emailing LinkedIn’s SVP- a sponsor of the program” Amanda Rost told me. Applications for LinkedIn’s Business Leadership Program had closed 8 months ago and graduation was only a month away.
I realized that meant I was dead in the water. I had sent hundreds of cold emails to potential employers and recent grads, but responses were hard to come by. Why would a busy executive reply to a college student?
But I had nothing to lose- it was a last ditch effort.
That night, I spent hours hunched over a laptop in my college’s library, nestled between stacks of books, papers, and stale food. My thick hoodie and headphones blocked out all the noise around me and let me focus on crafting what I hoped would be the “Mona Lisa” of cold emails to LinkedIn’s Mike Gamson
I had to make sure he would see it. A catchy subject line, a compelling story, and an alarm set for 5:30 am meant I’d be the first person in his inbox. If only I knew how to schedule emails back then…
I woke up and hit send.
An hour went by- suddenly, a reply; then another, and another. Emails started flying. I’m passed from one person to the next and 2 weeks later, someone dropped out of the program and a door opened. —— I heard “no” 3 times before I received an offer from LinkedIn and from a cohort of 30, there’s 2 of us left in sales here after nearly 7 years…
And what an incredible ride to look back at! As an eager new grad with a chip on my shoulder, I was hungry to prove myself, fight for the most bumps as an SDR, and stave away feelings of imposter syndrome that loomed above me daily.
As the years went on, so did motivations. The one that has remained steady is to do right by the people who took a chance on me: to show them they made the right decision. I’ll always carry an immense amount of gratitude for them and hope to pay it forward to anyone in a similar situation as that sleep-deprived college student 7 years ago.
Thank you to Amanda Rost and Mike Gamson for opening the door to my dream job. Thank you to Tracy Chia, Joey Wright, and James Brady for advocating for me. Thank you to Karen Borsetti, Mitch Krause, Leah Smart, Alexandra Tickner, Janel Gallucci, and Kyle Roslyn, for taking a chance on hiring me.
