The goal of any metric is to help you make decisions about the future. As Ben Yoskovitz puts it, “a good metric changes the way you behave”. If a metric doesn’t clearly tell you what you need to do next, then you need to replace it with one that does.
I recently spoke with a SaaS founder who complained that a recent audit of his codebase revealed gross inefficiencies. It explained some of his product’s performance issues.
He suspected that the issue might have been a specific metric he had asked his engineers to track: the number of code lines written. The more lines his engineers wrote, the more productive they were, the more value they created for the business. This was the logic and it turned out it was faulty.
Unless you’re getting paid by the line of code you write, tracking it doesn’t help you make any sound decisions about the future. Tracking code performance, on the other hand, moves you closer to a bug-free and performant product. #saasmetrics #finance #saas
