Virginia Heffernan is an American journalist and cultural critic who currently works as a columnist at Wired.21 She was born on August 8, 1969, in Hanover, New Hampshire.24
Heffernan has an extensive background in journalism and has contributed to several publications, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wired, Politico, The Wall Street Journal, Mother Jones, and many others.24 She is the author of Magic and Loss: The Internet as Art, where she argues that the Internet is a "massive and collective work of art".24 In her journalism, Heffernan applies methods of literary criticism to write about culture and technology.24 Her work often focuses on the human aspect of technology, advocating for broader and more critical thinking regarding new technologies.2
Before joining Wired in January 2015, Heffernan was a staff writer.13 Prior to that, she served as a national correspondent for Yahoo News, covering the 2012 presidential election and writing about media, technology, politics, and culture.24 She also worked as a senior editor for Harper's Magazine, a founding editor of Talk magazine, and a TV critic for Slate.24 From 2003 to 2011, she was a staff writer for The New York Times, initially as a television critic, then as a magazine columnist, and later as an opinion writer.24
Heffernan earned a B.A. summa cum laude in English and Philosophy from the University of Virginia in 1991.24 She also holds a master's degree in English literature (1993) and a Ph.D. in English and American Language and Literature (2002) from Harvard University.214
