How do Product Managers track their user behavior? . . Do you know companies can track every small thing you do on their website or app?

→ Where did you click?

→ How much did you scroll on the page?

→ What was the path you took to reach to a particular point on page?

Anything and everything!

But, how and why?

➡ Let's look at the why part first.

This data helps companies (read as Product Managers - the culprits for all these things 😜) understand how their users are navigating on their pages.

Each page on a website/app is created with an objective and navigation structure in mind.

A lot of times, our inherent biases lead us to create designs the way we like, which may or may not be the most user-friendly ways.

Due to these biases, users may use the product in a different manner than what PMs had initially thought.

(Ever tried clicking on a button in an app but it didn't work because it wasn't actually a button? If yes, this is a classic example of what I am talking about)

That's where User Heatmaps and Session Recordings come in handy for Product Managers.

With Heatmaps, you can deep dive into

[1] Where and how many users are clicking

If users are not clicking on the CTAs you want them to, then the positioning or visual appeal of those CTAs is not correct.

[2] Potential bugs

Are users trying to click on an actual CTA but not going anywhere? If yes, you need to get it checked and fixed.

[3] To what extent are users scrolling down your page

Whatever sections you add on the page, you need to estimate the potential impact it will create.

Based on the scroll-depth, you can estimate this impact and accordingly choose the position of widgets.

➡ Now, the how part. How can companies track all these things?

It's not at all difficult to add all this tracking on your page.

There are various tools such as Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar | by Contentsquare, Mouseflow that provides Javascript that you can add to respective pages and it's done. So simple!

The heatmaps and session recordings are available in the dashboards of respective tools.

Just be mindful that these javascripts can make your page heavy and impact your page load times. This may work against you if you are dependent on SEO traffic from search engines.

So, use these judiciously, and on need basis. Continuous monitoring may not be required.

Case study for PMs (could be an actual startup idea) . . LinkedIn doesn’t currently offer detailed/granular insights around the content that users (content creators) are posting on LinkedIn. It offers very high level insights such as impressions and engagement.

Providing detailed analytics and insights to users who are posting content could empower them with more knowledge and with that they are likely to publish more content.

This will further drive engagement on the platform, thereby strengthening the loop between content creators and content consumers.

As a product manager at LinkedIn, you have to create a detailed dashboard(s) for content creators where they can see analytics and insights related to the content that they are posting.

What are the key metrics you will show in that dashboard?
