Highlights
With the IPO window open, the Forge Index hit a record high recently!
The Forge Private Market Index is an up-to-date measure of the pricing of venture-backed, late-stage companies that are actively traded in the private market. What factors are driving this? → Astera Labs and Reddit, Inc. IPOs Both companies showed impressive performance during their public debuts, with Astera Labs closing with a 72% increase and Reddit up by 48%. These gains significantly exceeded their last private market evaluations. → Overall Market Performance The Forge Private Market Index outperformed many public equity ETFs in March, driven by the robust performance of these IPOs and other companies. However, the index lagged behind some comparable ETFs for the full first quarter. → Market Momentum Demand for private companies is rising. The Forge platform has seen the highest proportion of buy Indications of Interest (IOIs) since August 2021. Moreover, the total number of IOIs submitted to the Forge platform increased by 45% in Q1 2024 compared to Q4 2023. After two years of fighting headwinds, the private market seems poised for growth, given all the renewed interest in tech startups and the possibility of IPOs. Most notably, the IPO pipeline continues to grow. Rubrik also went public recently, and the stock has remained well above the IPO price. Many unicorns, like fintech company Klarna, are expected to IPO in the coming months. There is also a much broader set of companies with the potential to go public this year now that the markets welcome IPOs with open arms. But Startup Fundraising is still a Challenge Despite that Forge data shows companies raising the most capital in nearly two years, over half of the funding rounds were either down or flat, indicating that acquiring capital remains costly for companies. This trend was also observed among the best-performing companies, which did not experience significant valuation boosts when raising primary capital. This situation is very different from what we saw a few years ago. While the IPO market has heated up, pre-IPO companies may still face a prolonged period of recovery. But this pattern is typical, with the public markets leading. The private markets are usually soon to follow.
