Sifted study: 45% of founders say their mental health is "bad" or "very bad." Oof!

That's depressing (no pun intended).

I've seen quite a few depressed founders and was in a dark place myself. There are things that help me. Maybe they will help you, too.

Sports. Even a light workout can wind you down in the evening or give you energy in the morning. Jogging, spinning, playing football – whatever you like. There's a whole chemistry behind it. I won't delve into it, just trust me – regular workouts will make you a bit happier.

Mushrooms. It's controversial, so I'll just say that some trials say shrooms can help people battle depression. They break negative thought patterns, change perceptions, and rewire the brain. Works for me, but be careful.

Therapists. Even if you don't have depression, talking to a therapist is a good idea. If you are overworked, exhausted, and broken, you definitely need one. I hope CEE founders no longer carry the stigma against therapy, as our parents did.

Vipassana retreats. It's a brain defrag tool. Helps to calm down, recharge, and gain perspective. Vipassana showed me that I could manage my mind more than I realized, and this instead helped me feel more in control.

Meditation. When I meditate every day, I feel connected and calm. There are fewer things that can make me anxious. Meditation gives me a break and also helps me notice that I'm alive and well – something we all take for granted.

Showing your pre-seed traction is tricky. It isn't just about the usual metrics.

The earlier the investment, the more it's about people and less about Excel tables. So, I look for a strong team.

Founders have to be experts in their industry. It's a huge advantage if they've sold a company before. I also look for energy, ambition, and curiosity in them.

Next, there must be demand for the product. Pre-orders, early fans, and first deals show there's interest, and that the startup is solving a real problem. Having an MVP at this stage is essential.

Then, the startup needs to prove it can attract and onboard users. Any signs of early customer acquisition, partnerships, or organic growth are good.

Financial metrics aren't as crucial in the early stages as they are later on. Still, I expect to see realistic projections about potential growth and profitability.

The market should be big and getting bigger. Without a growing market, the startup won't be able to scale or will face tough competition.

A bit off-topic: It's totally fine if an early-stage startup pivots. 2, 5, 10 times – as many as it needs.
