CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: MY WEEKEND IN CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
This past weekend, I had the unique pleasure of visiting Cedar Rapids, Iowa—a city that might seem unassuming at first glance but holds profound significance in Slovak and Czech cultural heritage. Invited as a speaker at the Economic Summit hosted by the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, I not only shared the Slovak PRO story but also celebrated the museum's 50th anniversary, immersing myself in a community vibrant with pride and tradition.
In #CedarRapids, the narrative of Czech and Slovak immigrants is not a relic of the past but a living, breathing heritage that permeates the city. It was an eye-opening experience to see how passionately this community upholds their cultural legacy. Although Cedar Rapids may not have the bustling vibe of New York or Chicago, where cultural attractions abound, it stands out as a heartfelt custodian of Czech and Slovak legacies in America. The city’s connection to the historical narrative of Slovak and Czech immigrants pursuing the American dream while preserving their rich heritage is deeply embedded in its identity. It’s a place where Czech and Slovak history is not just displayed but lived passionately every day.
The weekend was packed with events:
Václav Havel Exhibit Opening: Dr. Martin Palous, a personal friend of Havel and a former ambassador to the U.S. and UN, provided insights into the life of the Czechoslovakian statesman, dissident, and playwright.
Economic Summit: An intensive day of discourse and networking brought together leaders from Iowa, across the U.S., Slovakia, and Czechia, including dignitaries like Slovak Ambassador to the U.S., Radovan Javorcik, and Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell, Governor of the Olomouc region Josef Suchanek, among others.
Orloj Clock Tower Groundbreaking: The construction of a clock tower that mirrors the iconic Orloj in Prague began, creating a new symbol of our shared heritage.
Grand Opening of the Furdek Special Collection: The acquisition of the Reverend Matthew Jankola Library, has opened new opportunities for scholars and students interested in Slovak history, culture, and immigration.
Concert by Czechoslovak Mezzosoprano Ester Pavlů: An unforgettable performance that beautifully showcased our rich musical traditions.
Opening of the Alphonse Mucha Exhibit - Inspirations of Art Nouveau: This collection showcases the “Mucha Style” which later evolved into “Art Nouveau.”
50th Anniversary Gala: We celebrated the founding of this iconic institution, and the museum raised nearly $900k for the Orloj clock tower.
Cedar Rapids is indeed the perfect home for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. The city’s pride in its Czech and Slovak roots enriches every visitor's experience.
