Highlights
Sitting in Singapore airport, putting down a few words about the fantastic "Family Matters" Discovery Expeditions during my journey to IMD EMBA.
First and foremost, a big thank you to Marleen Dieleman 马琳 and Vanina Farber for organising this excellent learning experience.
Our team worked the entire week on the Pickering Pacific case. Thank you, Jacques Pickering, for this Case. A special thank you to Marleen Dieleman 马琳 for your support and guidance throughout the week; your input was key 🔑. Working on this case was challenging, with many obstacles to overcome, but thanks to our very productive team, we succeeded. Thank you, Soniya S, Manojkumar Selvaraj, Katarzyna Dyga-Krajewska, and Colin Hambling. 🙏
It was incredibly inspiring to hear and delve into the stories of: 🚀 Richard Eu and Richie Eu from Eu Yan Sang 🚀 Arthur Chua from Goldbell Group 🚀 Clinton Ang from Hock Tong Bee 🚀 Lim Hock Chee from Sheng Siong
I was completely immersed in the great presentation on the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) prepared by Boon Song Bin and Yiwen Chen.
My main learning points were: • 25% is not enough club...families grow at the speed of light! • Never ask to speak to the manager...find the owner • Don't forget about grandpa...he may be in charge • It's complicated... more family dynamics than I can imagine • It's not all about the money...socio-emotional wealth (e.g. legacy, dynasty, reputation) is very important
What was especially challenging was the morning runs 🏃♂️ in this super hot and super humid environment without having a heart attack... 😄 Bold runners: Simon Studer, Guy Teulings, Ewa Merino, and Greg Knight.
Rebeca Vadillo Dorado 🙏 provided excellent organisation and kept us coordinated 😉
Looking forward for next face to face module of IMD Executive MBA in Lausanne 🇨🇭 🧀 😁

Back in China after a long pause. We’ve visited Shenzhen as part of the #IMDEMBA Discovery Expedition with the topic of Innovation.
We’ve seen these companies in the Innohub:
- Amy Li from VoiceAI Tech https://lnkd.in/exNqDkGj
- Wallace Chen of Shenzhen Dingdu Technology Co. Ltd. who was introducing: https://www.croxover.tech
- Felix Lam of Shenzhen Gartec Safety Technology https://gartecst.com/en
My learning points from Innohub:
- Close proximity to Hong Kong and its university is key
- Enlightened investor with passion is critical, this was especially true for Amy Li from Voice AI
- Finally, don’t be afraid to fail and keep starting…. Once it will fly.. :)
Then we spent another days visiting these companies:
- BYD and discussions with Ma Jian and Wang Jia Hao
- Lenovo Ken Wong
- Huawei Victor Zhang
Especially with Huawei, thanks to Victor, the discussion was super open and super interesting. The huge amount of spending of Huawei in R&D (policy is a minimum of 10% of revenue, but in recent years it's around 18-19% of revenue a year) is breathtaking.
The other discussions with the young Shenzhen generation of GEN-Z or discussions with 翟斌Ben Zhai were super enriching.
Thank you Professor Mark Greeven for making this discovery expedition so intellectually rich. The insight which I got on China and its companies, its people, was just great. Thank you Professor Vanina Farber your feedback on our first visit to BYD. It changed my viewpoint and helped better understand the progress of innovation in China and how we can learn from it. Thank you to our group made up of Poornima Urs, Nicolas Campodonico, Romain BALDI, Michael Pinczuk, Joana Fernandes Ferreira. Discussion within team was not always easy, but we achieved all four points and I learned a lot from our cooperation and your feedback. (As Mark Greeven put it: "Feedback is a gift") And liked very much our debriefing session with Antonio Di Brino, CPA, CA, Ewa Merino, Alison End Fineberg.
Finally, I’m always happy to work and discuss with fellow cohort of GMFs Barbara Vettorel, Rakesh Nair,Greg Knight, Michael Pinczuk, Abdulrahman Alrebdi and rest of the February 2025 Cohort IMD Executive MBA, guys I learned heaps of knowledge from you.
Next Expedition: Singapore with the title “Family Matters." is approaching quickly. Looking forward to it.
