There are interesting opportunities ahead for Ontario's energy sector! Our latest bulletin provides a comprehensive update on the province's long term electricity procurement plans. The IESO's forecast shows a 60% increase in demand over the next 25 years, driven by electrification, population growth, and economic activity. This is before taking into account the rise of power-intensive generative AI.  Our team at Fasken, including my co-authors Adam Lewinberg, Chelsea Young, and supported by summer student Aditya Arora, have detailed recent and upcoming procurement initiatives, including the push towards more non-emitting resources like wind, solar, and hydro, alongside new capacity resources such as energy storage, bioenergy and hydrogen facilities.

Whether you're an energy developer, investor, part of an Indigenous group or another market participant, this bulletin sheds light on key considerations such as contract design, stakeholder engagement and procurement timelines, and the implications of agricultural land use in project development. For a deeper dive into Ontario's electricity landscape and how these procurements may affect you, check out our full update here: https://lnkd.in/gJxbcMNP.

A Challenge for the Nascent Nuclear Energy Renaissance: Harnessing the Dynamics at Play in the Uranium Mining and Fuel Supply and Enrichment Sector

There is growing interest in nuclear energy as part of the solution in addressing climate change. There are an increasing number of new nuclear power energy projects announced or underway in Canada and internationally, both larger projects and many SMRs. One of the key challenges facing any of these projects will be access to sufficient, accessible sources of uranium fuel and associated fabrication and enrichment services, for use in any reactor.  As part of the Fasken Global Mining Group 2024 Seminar Series (https://lnkd.in/dZrZmFbf) we are excited to be hosting a session to explore this important challenge. Our panelist will include:

James Scongack, Chief Development Officer, Bruce Power Brenda MacDonald, Senior Vice President Growth, Commercial, Supply Chain, Ontario Power Generation Sean Quinn, Senior Vice-President, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, Cameco Corporation Katie Lachapelle, CPA, Director, Equity Research, Metals & Mining, Canaccord Genuity Corp. Paul Murphy, Managing Director, Nuclear, Co-Head of Public Finance & Government Relations, Cross River Infrastructure Partners Alex Michshenko, Founder and CEO, Trident Maor Advisors

Many commentators predict a looming shortage of enriched uranium. Even today, more than two years since the advent of the Ukraine invasion, almost half of the uranium enrichment capacity of the world remains in Russia. Fabrication and enrichment capacity in the United States remains largely mothballed. Existing nuclear power plant operators are seeking supply from safe sources not subject to risk of sanction. All future nuclear power projects in various stages of development will need access to safe and secure supplies of fuel.

Please join us on March 4, 2024 at 7:30 am (ET) for this important discussion. We will hosting this event in our Fasken Toronto conference facilities. Guests are welcome to attend in person or online. Please register here: https://lnkd.in/dzDZfuGK.

Our panel will discuss the dynamics at play including new uranium mining projects under development, plans for expansion and growth by existing operators and challenges in addressing fuel fabrication and enrichment capacity at present, in the hopes of taking advantage of the nascent nuclear renaissance and supply safe and secure uranium to many of these planned and future projects.

Thank you to our panelists and to my Fasken colleagues Dyna Zekaoui, John Sabetti, Barbara Clark and Adele A. Ambrose for helping put this session together. We look forward to a lively discussion. #energy , #climatechange , #mining , #nuclearenergy , #Infrastructure, #Uranium, #pdac2024, #pdac #nuclearpower, #capitalmarkets, #corporatefinance, #M&A
